A global industrial manufacturer in more than 25 countries and >100k employees. The client was seeking to grow API business adoption. Other goals were to maximize value from API management investment, and establish API governance. There was wide variation in API maturity across different business lines and geographies. This meant different needs and expectations of where to focus next.
Our engagement was sponsored by both business/digital and IT capabilities. We identified and aligned API priorities for the next step in the client's API maturity journey.
We defined the ongoing role of the center for API enablement. We helped balance the enterprise-wide platform and governance activities with the API product plans for business units.
While the engagement included also consulting and mentoring, main part was a big internal hackathon. We used our Futudemy-service style sessions. Goal was to learn to innovate and communicate with APIs and prepare for the pitching.
It is possible to manage innovation and learning sessions in all continents with a few hundred participants in total. It was also possible to teach and encourage the participants from API zero to hero in a matter of weeks.
There is real value in keeping it simple for API priorities. Important API enablement / execution work risks unintentionally ending up in “no man’s land”. The API work will be without an appropriate operating model for responsibilities.
